A general layout of my creative process
1. Ideation
My involvement with a project usually begins at the brief, where aligning ourselves on clear goals marks our first step, and we raise the question: what is our ultimate ambition?
This is (often simultaneously) where the research starts. An exploration of both the client's existing universe, and new possibilities, through rationales, concepts and moodboards. This is ideation, where we get to broaden horizons and push borders. This allows us to discover new or hidden potential, and at the same time immensely helps to define and clarify. Are we broadening, evolving or revolutionising?
Over the years I've created dozens of research boards, and it's one of my favourite parts of the creative journey. This is where inspiration hits, where real spirit and passion starts to seep into the project.
Research, moodboards, rationales, slogans.
2. Visual concept
We curate the research into a selection of clearly defined (visual) concepts. Each route providing an answer to our goal from another interesting angle, and always linking back to the original brief.
Once we identify the right (visual) strategy, we refine the treatment and ultimately confidently step into pre-production.
Scripts, storyboards, style frames, design system, motion principle, techniques, etc.
3. Pre-production
As we transition into pre-production, we build an enthusiastic team to bring us into production. We make our vision even more tangible. For shoots, this phase is more elaborate.
Location scouting, lighting plan, casting, stock search, aligning agenda's, etc.
4. Production and post-production
During the production phase I direct the team towards remarkable results, to make manifest our shared vision. I am dedicated to all parts of the production process.
Herein I consciously choose collaboration to be at the heart of my leadership. I try to empower each individual, to foster a shared sense of care and responsibility. In my experience, an empowered team creates both the most exceptional result, as well as a positive and stimulating work environment.
5. Delivery
Ideally I can stay involved all the way through to delivery, ensuring both the larger picture and more easily overlooked details, meet the full extend of our shared vision. By the end I want to be able to look back and know that we’ve built meaningful emotional connections through our project: the most powerful instrument to build strong, lasting relationships.
